I know how tough long distance relationships can be. I've been with my girlfriend 8 1/2 years and we're still long distance! We started going out when I was at Sussex Uni and she was at Leeds (I know you're from the UK so you'll know that's a long way!) but now we're a bit closer (near London: Southampton)
If it helps, I think one of the things which kept us going was SKYPE - we sometimes sign in on video chat and just leave it on all evening while we're doing our own thing. It kind of feels like we're in the same room a bit more and like we're sharing our evening together. Plus, on our mobile network (3), we can use SKYPE (but not video) on our phones so we can be signed in and talking to each other as much as we want. Also we make sure that most of the time we do see each other it's just couple time, not going out with mates time. We've now finally bought a house and should be moving in together in about a year!
So... ...don't know if it's right for you, but long distance relationships can work, even for a very long time. Good luck either way!
