Software moves hardware OP, Nintendo takes a license fee because they need to share the burden of distributing the hardware licensees use as a platform.

In other words if they don't have a tun of software versus their competition who also hold platforms then they seem unhealthy to any investor worth their salt. Why is because gamers flock to the platform with the most software, and usually the most software that appeals to them. In sheer numbers 90 nintendo titles over 6 years can't beat out over 1300 titles in the same 6 year period.
