It was a lost cause from the start for them to ever try and convince anyone of a potential link between Baathist Iraq and al-Qaeda. I mean, Saddam should and probably would have been an ally against the radical Islamists. He was an Arabic Nationalist, which has very different goals, and despite their mutual opposition to America and Israel, radical Islam presented as much of a threat to Saddam as America or Israel did
