The only evidence I have on PS3 reliability is I bought a 40GB PS3 a year ago, and its been through a lot, moved flat twice, its been folding whenever its not gaming in northern Aus summer (hot) and haven't had a single issue with it. Obviously that means nothing in the context of this thread, much like knowing someone who's PS3 died also means nothing.

If you do want to blow dust out of the PS3 without opening it up, turn the PS3 off, and then switch it off using the back switch. Press and hold down the eject and power buttons, and switch it back on at the back, and the PS3 will beep and spin the fans in reverse at 100% fan speed (its hairdryer loud) for around 10 seconds. Switch it back off at the switch, and then turn it back on and let it boot up normally. How successful it is in removing dust I'm not sure, but I'm guessing Sony wouldn't have programmed it in if it did nothing.
