I think you missed what I said ...
Sony could easily stop the 40GB model from playing Blu-Ray MOVIES and save money on licencing fees (I'd imagine the licence would be $25 to $50 per system) and by removing any dedicated hardware (potentially, they would have hardware decoders which would no longer be needed).
