If you killed the council in ME (Assuming you were a renegade when you made that decision), the humans take over the council in ME2.

I know, I was just saying that as far as the story is concerned, I hope that the galaxy isn't in too much chaos.... Though considering the events that just preceded (especially with that ending), things would probably be quite hectic in the Mass Effect world.

BOOK RELATED SPOILERS!!!!

According to the second Mass Effect novel, the galaxy doesn't know the Reapers were involved.  They think the Human fleet managed to decimate the bulk of the Geth Armarda, an Armarda thought to be acting of it's own initiative.

So, was the events just covered up or something?

The Characters the book followed weren't directly involved in the Citadel attack.  Cerberus knows a bit, but the general public is in the dark.  Rumours abound, but it appears most people think whatever they are not being told is inconsequential.
