I have serious doubts about Apple producing a console. More than likely these hirings are to beef up their lackluster support for computer gaming. Yes one of the guys was a GC engineer, but all that means is that he has come insight already into Apple machines. His GC experience will allow Apple to improve their game software hardware layer. As at the moment Macs only have OpenGl and OGL lacks elegant easy to use techniques. Having a engineer work with their software guys could produce an improved OpenGL gaming layer api to start trying to produce a MS DX and XNA(?) system. Having an easier game development on Mac system might entice developers.
After that if they then use the same model as the iPhone/iTouch distribution of cheap games as an introductionary method they could can increase their gaming profile. With their game profile increased they can finally start making a real dent into the PC market.
