I checked out the EA sports area in the US version and I noticed that it has has a line system for playing the mini-games. While it still sucks that you still have to try and beat other to the punch to play mini-games, I was able to get in a line and wait till the other people finished their race on the indie car racing game.
While I don't know how to play poker, I saw the same thing on the poker tables.
