Gears sold well because of the innovation with cover and cover fire along with team play (and graphics). But if one were to release it today, when its been done and dealt with through a huge amout of games already, it would fail.

Its the same with techs. Just because SNES was big, doesnt mean a rip off would sell well today if you marketed it as the return of SNES for this generation.

 

I really wouldn't say that gears sold well because it innovated. Gears was more of a success based on execution rather than innovation, it sold well because the style of the game fit with the target audience, it had the best graphics at the time and it was marketed very well (and it was a good game).
