In anthropology class we were taught the balance of power between men and women depends on who brings home the food (or in today's society, money)

There have in fact been matriarchal societies before. It depends a lot on geographical location. Men traditionally do the hunting and the women do the gathering - what the land naturally had to offer had a lot to do with how the society shaped.

Nowadays we are so far from hunter-gatherer societies things balance out - women don't have to spend nearly as much time out of their lifespans raising kids. Both men and women can earn livable wages - even if men still statistically on average make more.
