I think the problem Sony faces is that all of their major sellers are in remission. GT, FF, MGS all have diminishing sales and are fairly hardcore (GT less so, but still). On the other hand MS is creating new IP with its partners that is exploding like Gears, Lost Planet and dead rising. It also has many new titles coming out like Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey and Alan Wake that are expected to have strong sales where Sony's new IP have largely sold poorly (Warhawk, Lair HS).
Sony still has brand name, but you can no longer argue that they are gaming's Mecca.
