Sony did not come out with the PS3 advertising it (or even mentioning it) as the "console to serve your multimedia and gaming needs for the next decade". That kind of longevity talk came WAAAYYY later because they are trying to save face. Actually this talk was from before the PS3 even launched in 2006:

I said nothing about your age: According to a Nielsen study the XBox 360 is most popular amongst 12-17 year old males. The Wii is most popular amongst kids aged 6-11 and the PS3 is most popular amongst 25 to 34 year olds. |
Sony's older demographic is probably why it will have a shorter life than the Xbox 360.
