Sony is in a dire situation indeed. But price cutting and increasing software titles are not the answer. At least not with the current status quo.

Sony needs what they had with the PS & PS2 that they lost with the PS3 - the mass market. Nor are they fighting against 360 for that market, they are competing against Nintendo (and to an extent Apple in the portable market).

The PS3 was designed as a 360 killer. Bigger, badder, bolder. And they ignored the casual gaming market that made their previous console such a huge success - arrogantly expecting that market to just follow in time blindly. Wii was designed to scoop up that market and has left Sony locked in a battle of attrition with MS for the core gamer. A battle they simply cannot win - even if eventually they outsell the 360, it'll be at much, MUCH too high a cost.

The way I see it, Sony has two options - At E3 they totally reimage the PS3 to a casual-friendly system with a lower price, some innovative controls to counter Wii's, much more focus on mass market games, slim version, less masculine design (and colour). Followed with a massive marketing campaign to their new audience.

However, that kind of re-imaging is extremely difficult to pull off successfully and would anger their current base.

Alternatively, ditch the PS3 ASAP and introduce a PS4 that is a spiritual successor to the PS2 - a system for everyone where all games have a place. I think it's imparative Sony does this right away. If the more trendy and innovative Apple does enter the market with a Apple TV/console system as rumoured before PS4 hits the market, then Sony will be squished out by the moneybags corporations - Nintendo, MS, Apple who have $$$ to spare.
