Actually, Liquid doesn't live through Ocelot's arm. That's what we are led to believe in MGS2, but MGS4 explains the situation in a logical manner.

If it did, I don't remember it at all.  The channeling of a spirit through his arm or something, was what I remember.  Something about a soul transfer done through the arm, transferring of a personality.  Maybe I am off.  It struck me as a videogame plot device when I saw it in MGS4.  Feel free to post a spoiler below or post a URL to the link.

From what I remember, Ocelot got rid of liquids arm after the events of MGS2 and opted for a cybernetic transplant. Much like how Raiden got his ninja body. The reason why Ocelot too on the persona of Liquid was not because of the arm but through the use of psychiatric drugs that made him the way he was in MGS4. This was clearly evident at the end of the game, where old snake defeated Ocelot atop of that huge ship.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Guidelines to understanding my train of thought:

  • THE METAL GEAR SOLID FRANCHISE IS THE BEST THING TO HIT THE PLANET SINCE THE PS3!! THUS, MGS FRANCHISE >> SLICED-BREAD.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always shove 1up mushrooms up Mario's ass.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always decimate Master Chief with a flurry of rocket launchers, shotgun rounds, and a 20 minute monologue.
