The Gamecube (like all systems that survived long enough) had a lot of amazing games which appealed to most gamers and yet people were not willing to spend $100 or $150 to play some of the best games of the generation. How many people who spent $150 on a PS2 are going to pay $400 on a PS3 to play Grand Theft Auto? The truth is that it will be not that many people ...
A general rule with the console industry is "The console that is going to sell well is selling well ... The console that is going to sell poorly is selling poorly." There are many reasons for this but they all tend to revolve around a feed back loop:
- Most gamers buy a console they are exposed to through a friend or relative. Most gamers are personally exposed to the console that is selling well so they choose to buy the console that is selling well.
- Most gamers choose the console which has the most games, most third party developers choose which systems get the games based on the sales of the system, thus the system that is selling better than the competition will get the most games and thus sell better than the competition.
- etc.
