I'm actually re-playing Gears 1 on insane, this week! I guess, a lot of Gears 1's love comes from it's original impact. I prefer Gears 2 by far! Dom runs off and gets killed anytime a butterfly flies by in Gears 1. I command him "Form up!" Dom yells back, "I can't make it!" Why can't you make it, Dom? I'm looking right at you. Wasted my breath, because Dom just ran face first into a Troika cannon. "Somebody....help me...", He begs. "Hey! Fuck you, Guy!!", I reply.
Gears 1 also had it's bad driving sequence and broken end boss (Raam with Kryll on a train). I hate to reach that part. Both games are awesome, and the fact that Gears 2 doesn't make Gears 1 obsolete is a plus, in my book. It's like Mario 3/Mario World. Both are very replayable.
