According to the data Sony by 31 March 2009 sold 22.91 million PS3s to retailers worldwide. For the year sales were up ~10% compared to the year before despite having had no official price drop for well over a year.
Gaming devision losses dropped by ~53%, despite issues with the strong yen and retiring profitable PS2 hardware and software sales.
Sony sold 10.06 million PS3s for the fiscal year, in line with my expectations of 10 million unit sales earlier.
VGChartz comparison:
Comparing Microsoft and Sony sales data, the sales gap was 7.29 million (XBox 360 - 1 year headstart in NA and Japan, 1 year and 5 months headstart for PAL regions and more for various other regions).
Taking VGChartz data retailers had 118% more PS3s in stock than XBox 360s. I think this needs some optimisation and investigation, as PS3 boxes take up more retailer space, I think this is unlikely unless there is well more shelf space dedicated to the PS3 than for the XBox 360.
