Yeah, thank god Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda Twilight Princess were such leaps and bounds above all previous iterations (I enjoyed both games, but don't go pretending it's massively inventive). I guess Pokémon 41247 and Mario Tennis 4864123120 were incredibly original too huh?
@ OP: Every console has its "same ol' same ol'". GT5 will be "same ol' racing" but with improvements all around. Same goes for other games. That doesn't mean there is no innovation. Games build, adapt and change based on what they know already.
You will have to look long and hard to find games that created an entirely different genre or atmosphere. That's partly because it's too risky to venture into the unknown and partly because there's a limit to what one can do with a console. There have been plenty of unique games on all consoles. (and I do find it funny that you use World At War as an example for the PS3's lack of innovation, since it's a multiplat :p Sony can't really force other developers to go the innovation-way :p)
I have found this generation easier but already more enjoyable than the previous one tbh. You can find innovation, fun and originality if you look for those. That's not to say that 85% won't be the same ol' same ol' (and if it is still fun, why complain? :))
