Is that because they were atheists or because they were Stalin and Mao?
I can't think of a single theocracy that isn't a dictatorship using religion to control everybody's actions.
Why is it that when a religious leader massacres millions of innocent people, the argument is "Oh, well religion isn't evil, that person was evil and used religion to get to power, but they weren't really religious anyway" but if an atheist uses communism or any other political agenda to get to power... it's atheism's fault?

America was very secular a few centuries ago. Barely anybody went to church, and there were no megachurches, or church revival road shows, or evangelical radio and TV stations. New technologies have spread the church around with the different evangelical and revival and born-again movements. But it's hard to spread religion on the internet, and I think that's one of the main reasons more kids are growing up without religion.
The U.S. was founded by deists as a secular nation, and several of the founding fathers even actively hated religion and said so all the time. So yeah... atheists have been around forever.
Everybody seems to either be attacking the article (makes sense) or attacking atheism as a whole (as usual).
But before the article went all inflammatory and crazy, he did raise a good argument. We live in a secular society founded by deists, in which atheists are anti-torture, anti-war, and anti-death penalty, but they get painted as the villains by evangelicals who are pro-torture, pro-war, and pro-death penalty. Aren't those good Christian values (as in... coming from Christ's teachings, not from modern evangelical Christianity)?
Are atheists living by Christian values while some Christians are living by the morals of a vengeful Old Testament God instead of the forgiving loving commie-hippie Jesus that washed prostitute feet, preached turning the other cheek and loving your neighbor and your enemies, and passed out free booze? I don't even believe in Jesus and I love the guy's advice. Why don't more Christians?
