If they do go ahead with a slim PS3 it will be because they were able to significantly reduce the size and number of components. Doing that reduces the cost, it doesn't increase it.

 

Branko is right.  A slim PS3 will be cheaper for Sony.  With less components or smaller size components it will reduce the produce price.
