I'm sure they do want to dominate with the Zune HD, I'm pretty sure they know they won't though. You're missing the point.
If you were the second best swimmer in a pool with Michael Phelps, going for a gold medal, you're still in it to win it, even if the odds are stacked against you.
I'm pretty sure people though the Wii didn't stand a chance, talking the way you're talking about Zune HD. But there is a chance and its not impossible, just unlikely.
To even get a good marketshare would please Microsoft with the Zune ...
