Just read a thread on Howard Stinger Comments which can be found on this thread.

"We developed brand new, absolutely incredible technology for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), but the cost was high", Stringer told Nikkei Electronics Asia. "We've adopted a slightly different approach now, and are evolving the PS3 into a platform for web services".

So if they feel that PS3 is evolving than how ppl are expecting to have such a short life.? i mean the management of Sony is definitely seeing potential and they can take full benefit out of it, if it has a longer life span..

Becuase costumers are the one who judge how long a system lives for, not the developers. When consumers stop buying the console/games, they have to make a new one. People buy new consoles for new entertainment experiences. They stop using it once the entertainment value wears off. Since games are coming out too slow and the current trend (which Sony has been following) console lives have been shorter and shorter, pointing to less entertainment value. The PS3 doesn't have entertainment value, so they need a new system.
