We may be looking here at companies doing "tech refreshes" the way the Wii and the DS/Gameboy series have been. A system completely compatible with the old games is released, which has upgrades to it, comes out every 5 years or so. Even now, you see Sony and Microsoft doing tweaks to their systems, such as upgrading the harddrives. Memory could be the next one to be upgraded, then the graphics chip. Then the CPU gets to be faster.
