i'm sorry that's like the most horrible thing I've heard on VGC. I hope you're not serious.
anyways, I believe this is fairly typical of many immigrants. You have the idea that the streets are paved in gold, and that everyone can become rich, but then you find out that there's no such thing as a free lunch.
The fact that only rich people visited Senegal probably enforced this fact even more. He probably thought "hey every person from france is rich; therefore if I go to france, i can be rich too!"
