Hmm.. yea, then it likely wouldn't have worked.

But now that I think it about there might have been a way, if you had removed the hdd and installed a new one in your PS3 and then had connected your old hdd to the PS3.

The next time I hear of someone with a similar problem I'll try and suggest to do it that way.
