I don't think this is true.
If Sony were going to make these kind of changes, they'd probably save it for the actual "PSP 2" and not just a redesign. It would be far more effective at giving them momentum at the start of the next gen of consoles than it would right now. That way, they could actually add in a second analog nub, release games in Memory Stick Pro Duo format, etc.
Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3
