I haven't seen it but trek needed a reboot. The films were making less and less money (not to mention the continual drop in quality of the films themselves), one more normal trek film would probably have killed the franchise's viability in the cinema for good.
Thankfully the gamble appears (at least critically) to have paid off. Lets hope it resonates with the mass audience, for Star Treks sake.
I was going to see it regardless of quality though, I'm a sucker for sci-fi.
