DS carts are custom memory cards to prevent piracy; Nintendo could've easily used SD cards which are very cheap and offer enough capacity to even surpass UMD (2GB) but that would make it easy to crack the DS and play pirated roms on it. Better safe (and mute ) than sorry, I guess.
