It wouldn't make a difference anymore. The people that pushed out hot game after hot game are no longer there. Sega would not be able to support a new console with even remotely the same quantity of quality software as they used to. A lot of their great games came as arcade ports, and Sega isn't making much in arcades any longer. It's best that Sega went out with a bang, giving us all quite possibly the best 18 months of gaming any console could have hoped to give, and plenty of innovations for the industry to boot.

They wouldn't come back regardless. Console gaming is a tricky business. It's not easy to get it to happen, and Sega's executives were never on the same page about anything. Even two out of three of the current console makers don't know shit about being profitable doing it.
