Hard core Shump fans do play shumps where they control two ships at once. There is tactical reasons for wanting to have this. Think of the second ship as a drone, like in RType, that you actually control. I remember seeing on Youtube, someone playing Ikaruga that way.
A point for it is that it gives you more firepower.
