Japan has always been a handheld market anyways. The Gameboy is the highest selling console of all time there, and Pokemon the highest selling game. It's just during the PS2 era where the Gameboy Advance was fairly westernized and didn't have as much Japanese appeal (although it still sold almost as much as the PS2).

Thus the reason Sony needs to focus a little more on the PSP. I believe Handhelds is where the future lies and the competition is getting fierce, they need to renew demand for it in the western world.
