Because, time is on the PS3's side. The differences between it and the X360 become greater as time progresses. LOL, you make it sound like if processing power would be arelevant to any console's success.
The manufacturing advantage goes to Sony (for chip shrinkage and slimer designs). The perception of a big price difference will desolve as well. How, exactly? Microsoft can cut their prices too, both by reducing production costs, and by making losses, especially so because of their huge, stable financial background. $200 xbox360 vs. $300 PS3? $100 xbox 360 vs. $200 PS3?
MS already said they want to get out first again. And Sony didn't say if they want to challenge them in that, or not. (the 10 year plan is about something else).
Sony will be in a better boat the longer they can keep from putting out the PS4. Usually, PS launches around the 5 to 6 year mark of the previous console generation. That's what makes me believe Sony will release it later. There is no point in comparing the PS generations to each other. A giant corporation is not working like a human mind that has its own habits, and tricks. It is working as the market requires. PS2, the best selling console ever, was so popular that it was in the front line for 6 years. xbox 1, was financially the worst of the last gen, and it lasted for 4 years before Microsoft had no reason to continue. The gamecube was somewhere in-between, with low sales, but nice profitability, to last for 5 years, that is an avarage for most consoles. The PS3 has the (lack of) profitability of the xbox 1, but it is mostly compensated with better sales. This is why I expect it to be released in 2011 after 5 years, and not in 2012 after 6 years, that would be the length of an extraordinarily successful console, that it isn't. |
