Well, if you have ever been around a smoker or smoke in general for an extended period of time, your nose simply cancels out the smell so you can pick up other scents.

Once you leave the smokey area, your nose begins to recognize the smoke smell again, but because smokers are constantly smoking they tend not to notice.
