Except it wasn't a race. The US, UK and Canada knew exactly what Russia was going to do... but they hardly cared. Already made up plans to split germany knowing exactly what russia would do with it's half. Hell the nations east of Geramny were already under russias control and everyone throughly hated the germans at this point anyway. Western Germany was just a buffer for France and the rest of western europe... until it became a vital chip in the cold war pot. The US, UK and Canada basically let Russia hit berlin first because they didn't care to waste any life and was worried about who woudl get credit... hence they adopted a "board based approach" where they just moved their entire line slowly towards the russians... rather then make one of the two chances they had to break through and push to try and beat the russians to Berlin. They didn't because the first plan was placed by a Canadian, and they were worried because he was generally conservative and the US and UK were affronted that a Canadian could win the "Final glory" in the Western Front. While Patton suggested the same thing a little latter... and the UK still took offense to someone not the UK taking it. Leaving it to Russia who didn't have to worry about who got the credit was the best "compromise".
They did realize what russia was and would become though. The best was Patton who suggested that they "Head straight for Berlin and don't stop until they were in Moscow". |
Tell me about it, the Polish government during the War managed to escape to England and set up camp there. Then after the russians came into Poland they put some of their own men in charge of the polish underground and created a new false government. After all was said and done it was too late to do anything about it, all the political opponents were hanged or shot in the woods.
