I have 4 1/2 days worth of online multiplayer in COD4, plus another two days in COD:WaW. I've enjoyed every second of both. No single player FPS adventure could ever equal that.

In other genres, it would depend, but I really only do shooters and sports games online anyways. For sports games I would choose multiplayer again because of friends and online leagues.

Half-Life 2 + SP mods... or Deus Ex + SP mods.

I have Half-Life 2. I still haven't finished it. I'm about an hour and a half in. If the core experience isn't remarkably enjoyable to me, I doubt the mods will be.

There's still the issue that there's no human element in single player + mods to keep me coming back. That is the defining trait that keeps me coming back to the online component in games, the change in each match because of human behaviors.

Huh?! Mods can infinitely increase the enjoyment of a game, regardless of the "core experience". Take a look at the mediocre Oblivion, which plays much , much better with a few mods on top of it.

Hell, when the Black Mesa mod hits, every single Half-life fan will go crazy. Black Mesa is a like a total remake of Half-Life 1, only as a mod for HL2, and it looks so awesome:
