Huh?! Mods can infinitely increase the enjoyment of a game, regardless of the "core experience". Take a look at the mediocre Oblivion, which plays much , much better with a few mods on top of it.
Hell, when the Black Mesa mod hits, every single Half-life fan will go crazy. Black Mesa is a like a total remake of Half-Life 1, only as a mod for HL2, and it looks so awesome:
