So I hear everyone clamoring over God of War 3 coming out this year. Thats cool I guess...except its the 4th freaking GoW game in 5 years. But it seems sony likes to spam their successful franchises.

Ratchet and Clanks come out every year, sometimes twice

Patapon 2 is coming out...and Patapon is hardly a year old.

Jak and Daxter, Resistance, Wipeout, Motostorm, etc

They must have sequelitis or something.

Do you feel their franchises are overused? -DISCUSS-

1) Well, duh. There was a PS2 game in 2005, then in 2007 (like Gears of War), then a game on PSP (by a different developer), then one on PS3, three years after GoW2, and two years after Chains of Olympus (it's not releasing in 2009)

2) It's bad that Insomniac has enough dedication to make a Ratchet and Clank game every year? Besides, even that's an exaggeration.

One in 2002, one in 2003, one in 2004, one in 2005, a PSP one in 2007, a PS3 one in 2007, a downloadable game in 2008, and a PS3 game in 2009. How is that overusing, when Microsoft are releasing two Halo games on the same console in the same year, and that's not overusing?

3) Patapon 2: Two games in the series, hardly overusing...

4) Jak? 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009. Again, not even once a year.

5) Resistance has had a game every two years, like most game series.

6) WipEout: 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008. 9 games in 13 years.

7) MotorStorm? A game every two years.

No, their franchises are not overused. You can't overuse a franchise until the character appears in over 10 games every year (Mario, or even Sonic). One game a year is not overusing a franchise. It's not like Sony are desperately reliant on one franchise, they just release a lot of different games at the same time. Is Call of Duty overused? Is Deca Sports overused?

EDIT: And I don't get why you are spinning the fact that Sony makes several quality games in different genres and making it a bad thing...

a character is not a franchise though. Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers are different franchises although they both have Mario. If you have to count the two as one franchise, Super Smash Brother Brawl would be a franchise of Metal Geear Solid 4 since it has Snake in it and a Zelda franchise and a Kirby franchise and a Pokemon franchise and a Metroid franchise and even a Mother franchise.

@Dgc1808

how are Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play and Wii Music in the same franchise?

I didn't see him mention SSB anywhere... But really now, isn't Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid the same franchise? I'd say they are, but by this logic it is not. Jak & Daxter is not the same franchise as Jak II and 3 either, since they changed the name, the 2 and 3 just indicates how many years it was since the original franchise. And then they made two new franchise out of that again with Jak X and Daxter.

@ Wii sports, fit, play and music: It's not the same franchise any longer? I remember people saying stuff like "By the end of the game the Wii Franchise will be the best selling franchise of all time!". It's only a franchise when it comes to sales then? It's the same franchise in the sense that they all use new innovation that could only have been possible on the Wii.

Did you just imply that Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 9 and Super Mario Galaxy are basically the same game, since they feature the same character and have all Mario in the title? o.O

And Wii Sports and Wii Chess are probably in the same franchise too, because ... they are so similar? Or wait, they have the Miis (only an assumption, didn't play Wii Chess)

I think you misremember, as I have seen people speak of the Wii series, but not a franchise...

@topic: I don't think you can speak of overuse unless there's at least 4 or 5 games out in that franchise. Also, it would only bother me if the quality sinks or it gets boring because of being too similar.
