Trollstyle:

matchmaking is a worthless piece of shit that only works for casual console FPS with 8-player max that rely on P2P hosting.

with that said, I think that it works for certain games (RTS) and other ones such as L4D but WITHOUT removing the ability to CHOOSE a dedicated server to play. L4D has left the server browser as borked option, and added an extra layer of difficulty with the whole group thing. they even tried to add matchmaking-like shit in TF2/DOD (the map list), but I doubt anyone use it. and what's worse, it constantly puts me in a game with Europeans, that's bullshit.

and teamspeak/ventrilo exists for ages, most game servers even have one teamspeak servers, with public rooms too.

I happen to find very few laggy games in Halo 3.  Even with 16 players.  Matchmaking is better from a competition stand point, not sure what is so casual about that.  I like the idea of a match, no joining players.  If you win, it is because you are better than the people who started on the other team,  no swapping, no joining.  Yes, quitting can be a problem, but it is not that big of an issue.  I enjoy playing with a party of four guys and constantly getting a new, equally skilled group of 4 guys to play against.  Not just mixing up the people from the previous game.  And once again, lag has never been a problem for me on Halo 3.

And yes, teamspeak is available, but if you think voice chat is as prevalent on the pc as it is on Live, you have to be kidding yourself.  But from vlad's point of view, that is not a bad thing.  I, for one, use the hell out of it.  And mainly for team play, not trash talking.
