I don't mind this personally.

However, I do feel it puts an end to any arguments that PC Gaming is some other planet that can't be compared to console gaming (I felt the argument was stupid in the first place, but whatever).

Thanks to multiple SKUs, consoles now have semi-regular, un-essential hardware upgrades. They have operating system updates. In the case of the PS3, you can even buy another hard drive for extra memory space.

So again, I personally think the multiple-SKUs are fine, I just don't want to see anyone arguing "PCs are totally different!" anymore. I'm tired of people ignoring PCs when its convenient to their argument (e.g. the 360 and PS3 have the best graphics).

The 360 and PS3 are about as different from the PC as they are from the Wii.

A PC isn't a Video game console and a Video game console isn't a PC, the two share certain functions and can even act as one another but they will always both be different in what they are. The two can obviously be compared when relevant but when the similarity is argumentative at best, the comparison falls apart and becomes little more than a convenient cop out for an argument supporting the connection just as you claim its a matter of convenience to deny the connection. It goes both ways, the situation has to be weighed on relevancy not tech specs.

Please explain to me what it is that distinguishes PCs in a wholesale manner from Consoles.

Let me give you a list of possibilities:

1) PCs can surf the web

2) PCs can download and play movies

3) PCs can store and dlownload pictures

4) PCs can play music

5) PCs can play games

6) PCs use word processors

7) Is an "evolving" platform with hardware updates

8) Is an "evolving" platform with software/OS updates

Any major functions I'm missing? Let me know. Which of these do you feel makes PCs a distinct animal from consoles?
