Don't get me wrong technology still has room to improve, but at least in the visual area we are approaching the point where the human eye is the limiting factor (at least in terms of resolution).
Contrast on TV's could still be greatly improved. OLED's will solve that. But that really doesn't have anything to do with the discs we are using. That has more to do with the TV's being able to PROPERLY DISPLAY what is already on those discs. Blu-Ray has great color fidelity. The limiting factor is more your TV's contrast ratio.
