The problem is that a lot of developers attempt to make these emotionless, unstoppable characters. And then, without any attempt at subtlety, they try to make them emotional.

*Slight Spoilers*

Before that scene, Kaim was just another cliched emotionless protagonist (I'm surprised more people don't criticize this). Then, all of a sudden you see some emotion. Could Mistwalker have been a bit more subtle? Imagine if Kratos suddenly started crying in an emotional scene of God of War 3. Most people would probably find it unnatural, and I don't think it's any different for these other characters.

Same with Gears of War 2. The scene where Dom discovered Maria to be maimed and tortured beyond repair was just awful. I know it was supposed to be emotional, but watching him blast Locust in the face all game and then watching him (a grown man) break into tears felt really unnatural. It's not like I'm an emotionless person. I thought there were some moving scenes in Lost Odyssey. I really felt for Vivi in Final Fantasy 9, and I even cried while watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off. A character like Batman is cold and brutal, but you actually have insight into his childhood and the pain he felt. In Lost Odyssey, it's basically about how Kaim is an immortal and about how much that sucks. I'd love to be immortal, but I feel for Mistwalker's cheap attempt at emotion.

The dreams were far better than any of the cutscenes, by far. Didn't that cutscene also have the kids singing? Yeah, that ruined it too.
