look at it this way
say a comedian is just shooting the shit with the audience. He then brings up the sprite commercials, subLIMEinal advertising, and makes some jokes about how businesses can do whatever they want now, even subliminally advertise and how he now goes and buys geico even though he doesn't have a car.
those people in the audience then go out to dinner. It is very likely that a larger number of them will order a sprite than if they had not heard him talking about sprite.
