There is so much idiocy in this thread, I don't even know where to start.
- Of course Sony wants to succeed. Given the fact that Sony is an entertainment company (TVs, Movie Players, Video Games, Movie studios, etc). This was a primary reason to bring Blu-Ray into the PS3. Trojan Horse? Hardly. The future maybe a little early? Probably. Blu-Ray will be the next format leader and possibly the last disc based movie format. People denying this are absolutely out of their minds and don't know the first thing about the way this industry and world works. Pushing the superior format that they were backing, made sense for Sony and made sense for games as well. The downside was initial costs.
- HD TVs are in and being gobbled up (Even in a recession). Go to Wal Mart or any electronics retailer if you live in the USA. You tell me how many 'SD TVs' you see? Every time I go into one of those places I see some less than tech savvy average, run of the mill person learning or wanting to upgrade to a nice Flat Screen LCD or some other variety of HD TV. This is only going to rapidly increase especially as the market is exclusively HDTVs.
- What do people want their nice new HD TV? HD-Cable and HD Movies. Why buy a new TV if you aren't going to get the best picture from it? Go to Wal-mart/Best Buy sometime and check out the extent of the growing Blu-Ray section. It's here people and it's not going away.
- DVD players in cars is going to completely ground the Blu-Ray market to a halt? Really? You REALLY believe that portable DVD devices are all the rage? Sure they are nice and probably won't be going anywhere for awhile but they (Like VHS) will eventually be replaced.
- The average person doesn't know much about the whole downloadable side of life. Secondly, the mindset of the consumer has to drastically change to not having an actual 'physical' movie collection but instead a 'digital' movie collection. Thirdly, this still doesn't address the slow broadband speeds across the US. I'm sorry but downloading an HD movie for 6 hours is a lot more effort and annoying than driving 10 minutes away and picking up a movie or two for the night.
