Because unlike the PS2, there won't be the incentive to develop for PS3. whether it is cheap or not. It simply wont have the self-sustaining userbase its predecessors did. As for coming close to the graphics of next generation? I doubt that. One of the main expenses in the PS3 is Blu-Ray, an expense that should be largely mitigated by the time we see new systems in 2011/12. For $400, the console companies will be able to offer consoles that are substantially more powerful than either the PS3 or Xbox 360. Look at the Wii. It only cost $250 at launch, and it is significantly more powerful in real terms than the Xbox.

I'm going to have to go with Gilgamesh on this one. The PS3 is going to keep selling and is going to have a much larger userbase than it does now.
There is no telling how the PS3 will evolve with its firmware updates and peripherals so it is safe to assume that it may find a way to combat anything which is brought againt it. This is not something which can be factored into the equation at this point.
Another thing which should be mentionned is that we should have learned that the harware itself does not need to be superior to the others in order to fulfill public expectations.
There is a great number of dedicated Sony fans out there!
