The reason it is bad now is because of Britain's policy of indirect rule, where they created a system of 'decentralized despotism.' Chiefs, elders and local kings (several forms of government already were in place) had to make their people happy as Africa was quite sparsely populated in a continent with an abundance of land. When the Brits came they reinforced an authoritarian system to keep people organized and to collect taxes. You also forget to realize that it was so easy for a long time because the African's didn't have the weaponry, but in fact they 'won' (plus the UK was losing a ton of money) their independence in several countries through skirmishes. English Language: The English language has made communication across various countries easier and has increased ease of trade greatly. British Legal System: Numerous countries today base their legal systems on the British and it is the envy of much of the world.
