The classical Greek period is my favorite. You really get a sense of where western thought came from.
I would suggest that while you may prefer a certain countries histories you really should look at the world in the grander scheme of things to truly understand a country. Studying English Imperialism would be extremely useful when studying American history for example. Nothing exists in a vacuum.
