As somebody who plays A LOT of fighting games competitively, some of the big name ones are just bad, so getting them down fast now is better, because a scrubby game no1 has heard of isn't going to beat a big name in the end.

Pretty much. 

There are several great fighting games that aren't mainstream but are better (IMO) than most "mainstream" fighting games.
