Seriously, unless he had no idea how the Wii works, he cannot compare the Wii market to the PS3 market.
It's all about the friendliness of the controls. Wii is successful because anyone from 2 to 102 can figure out the controls in 5 minutes. PS3 controls are an amplified version of PS2 controls, which are confusing to anyone who didnt start with a PS1 or has any experience flying alien spacecraft.
If that doesn't set the stage, then how about the economic fiasco? $400+ isn't something anyone is ready to drop for a videogame system these days.
Sony must make their employees take sanity tests, and hire the ones that fail it. =)
