It's a fairly new business really, this idea of downloadable content. As such, the whole supply, demand and pricing thing is fairly screwy. Obviously, the over priced dlc will sell badly, and because there's no physical product, and negligible costs for distribution (on the Wii60 at least, Sony charges now) Profit simply equals number of sales * price per sale - development cost
Companies will learn that by lowering their price, they can maximise profit due to increased sales
I also agree that free dlc is the shiznit, and in some cases can actually benefit the developers, who gain sales of the game itself, as well as customer loyalty for years to come
