If you are only looking at the XBox 360 and PS3 there is some reason to be optimistic (from Sony's perspective) that they could take the lead because (much like the PS2 vs the Dreamcast) the XBox 360 currently has a better line-up, a lower price point, and better online service yet isn't selling that well. It is quite possible for a system to start from nothing and pass the XBox 360 in 9 months given enough consumer demand.
