The show is about impressing the most people and pissing off the fewest. No one cares what the contestant's true feelings are. People only want the canned answers that make them happy.
Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman hit the point perfectly in the movie Bruce Almighty with this conversation:
God: I want you to pray son. Go ahead. Use it.
Bruce Nolan: Lord, feed the hungry, and bring peace to all mankind. How was that?
God: Great... if you want to be Miss America. Now what do you really care about?
